Anhedonia.

For decades, there have been a number of claims raised that point to causes of depression beyond a lack of serotonin and other neurotransmitters. One such claim, which has been getting a lot of attention recently, is that depression may be gut-related. In an effort to overcome depression as swiftly as possible, one may approach treatment from a number of angles then—including diet, exercise, and other healthy lifestyle changes. Therefore, it may be beneficial to combine traditional first-line depression treatments—namely, talk therapy and antidepressants—with other healthy lifestyle activities.

According to a recent article published by Stanford, “shifting to healthier lifestyle behaviors can improve the effectiveness of antidepressant medications and talk therapy.” It can also be used alone, as a treatment for mild depression.

Lots of evidence points to poor diet as a contributing factor to developing a dour mood. When this happens, the chances of developing minor or major depression increases. While the exact mechanisms are not known, what is known is that eating balanced meals helps improve the mood significantly.

Lots of research points to processed foods leading to depression. As a result, it may be beneficial to eliminate them from your diet as much as possible—if not completely. Also, by eliminating or reducing caffeine, alcohol, and sugar intake, you reduce your chances of developing the symptoms of depression and anxiety from a dramatic mood swings. Oftentimes, the crash from a sugar or caffeine high can cause a disruption in maintaining a consistent mood.

Participating in more physical activity has also shown to elevate mood and improve overall wellbeing. By exercising regularly, we allow our bodies to reach its peak condition. This helps us to be confident that we can handle whatever life throws at us. Exercise has been shown to enhance body-image, and increase self-esteem, which can work wonders for many types of depression and anxiety. For many, this is exactly what is needed to overcome a depressed or anxious state. To achieve and maintain a healthy mind and body, an adult should get either 150 minutes of a moderate-intensity activity, like brisk walking, or 75 minutes of a more intense activity, like jogging, per week.

Healthy living also includes a healthy mind. This means that participating in regular mindfulness exercises is encouraged. Through meditation, tai-chi, or yoga, one learns to slow down their thoughts, to focus in on what is happening in front of them, to make better use of their energy, for the task at hand.

These are excellent activities for mild to moderate cases of depression. For more severe cases, alternative treatments may be more effective. Many who find antidepressants and talk therapy ineffective on their own may benefit by supplementing their treatment with ketamine infusions. Many find its unique effects on the glutamate system to be an excellent way to quickly improve their sense of wellbeing, and overcome depression when no other treatment has worked.
